The Chartered Institute of Transport was founded in 1919 and granted a Royal Charter in 1926. In 2001 the institute merged with the Institute of Logistics to form The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport. Since then a number of other organisations have joined our professional community.
It is the only professional institute granted a Royal Charter;
‘to promote, encourage & co-ordinate, the study & advancement, of the science & art of Transport and Logistics in all its forms’
The Institute pursues this objective through both, its membership, and professional qualifications. The Institute aims to educate and develop not only those working in the sectors but also those who want to enter our professions.
For over 80 years the Institute has adapted to stay consistent and relevant to worldwide logistics and transport issues. From the beginning, the CILT's role has been education in the broadest sense: to spread knowledge and to be a source of authoritative views for communication to governments, industry and the community.
The Institute shares its vision promoting the learning of logistics and transport with governments, international bodies, universities, training institutions, and other logistics, freight, supply chain and passenger transport organisations.
Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II is the CILT International Patron and HRH the Princess Royal is Patron of the CILT in the United Kingdom.

-
Chartered Members - Chartered status is the aspiration of all professionals engaged in the Logistics and Transport sector. It stands for the highest standards of knowledge and expertise. The title of ‘Chartered’ denotes competence, professional responsibility, leadership and the commitment to serve the Transport & Logistics industry through advancing knowledge and best practice. Chartered Members, by virtue of their initial and continuing professional development, are capable of exercising professional judgment to a wide and often unpredictable range of circumstances, as well as assuming responsibility for strategic planning and direction. Chartered Members are able to use the post nominal’s ‘CMILT’
-
Chartered Fellows – Chartered Members who have demonstrated a long and continuous commitment to our profession are able to apply for Chartered Fellowship. In exceptional circumstances, Chartered Fellowship may also be awarded to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the Logistics and Transport sectors, or those who have attained a position of eminence in their field. Chartered Fellowship represents the pinnacle of professional success and is awarded to only a very small number of professionals. Chartered Fellows are able to use the post nominal’s ‘FCILT’
These titles are exclusive to the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and the standards and status of each grade maintained by all CILT Councils across the world.
